In Pop: Recall, Cory Oberndorfer returns to what inspires him most: color. Inspired by the principles of the color field and minimalist artists like Ellsworth Kelly, Anne Truitt, and Josef Albers, Oberndorfer reduces his work to basic shape, form and color. He believes that color alone can trigger a memory, feeling or thought; it is this theory that has been the guide to his work for the past four years. In Pop: Recall he brings you back to a time that is almost too distant to remember - when your day revolved around the ice cream truck - but it can easily pop back into view with a simple shape or color. The paintings and sculpture in this exhibition are the abstraction of our childhood favorites, reminiscent of popsicles and ice creams whose shapes and characters are forever imprinted in your mind, such as Tweety, Bomb Pops, Choco Taco and the Creamsicle. With his new work, Oberndorfer hopes to "get to the right place with color that you can almost taste the ice cream," or at the very least, hear the familiar chimes of the ice cream trick that seemed to play for hours after the truck had long gone.
